In this case, the operator could use the application to investigate the cause of, and quantify the financial and network impact done by, calls terminating in an otherwise normal rural area.
Projecting the Impact
The operator leveraged routeWATCH‘s facility for graphically depicting cost changes over time to highlight the problem. The anomalous calls typically lasted ten times longer than the average of all other calls throughout their network, and more damagingly, were three times as expensive to carry as their national average. routeWATCH projected the financial impact to annual network operating expenses allowing senior management to make the necessary adjustments in other spending areas to offset these unforeseen expenses. In the long term, the company’s attorneys had key financial and engineering data they needed to pursue legal remedies. If allowed to continue in a nationwide network, this abuse could easily have cost over $2.4 million per year in fraudulent calls, all to a single rural number.

In 2007, multiple national carriers took legal action against a group of rural Iowa local exchange carriers for partnering with free conferencing, long distance calling and adult chat lines at their expense. routeWATCH had identified and resolved exactly this kind of problem for Connectiv’s customer several months earlier.
